We Got There…

I made a small slideshow…I put descriptions on the pictures but they’re not showing up…basically this is our room, and then looking straight out from the balcony, and then a little “Wild West” town they have set up for the kids but that you can ride horses (yes, this resort has horses) around and through.

It was a good trip…weather got bad for a couple hours but we made it through. We got here, got offered champagne at check-in (we declined) and got settled then went for a walk around the resort, where Klutzy Kandy promptly twisted her ankle, knee, and REALLY hurt the foot that she strongly suspects she broke back in early December. So now I’m hobbling around everywhere. Wonderful.

Anyway, I was headed out to the much-anticipated hot tub (one of several) and it started pouring rain and lightening *sigh*

SO since I stayed up ALL night, I’m going to call it a night. Its only 8:35 back home, but its 9:35 here and I’m beat. Stay tuned tomorrow…something funny posting just after midnight…and I’ll try to get some more pictures taken and posted tomorrow. Sorry its such a thrown-together job tonight *blush*

Well, today is the day…as you read this, Justin and I are on the road to (hopefully) sunny and warm FL. As most of you know, he works for NASA and won an award recently, meaning he and I got treated to a trip to FL. We have an awards ceremony/banquet Saturday night, get to meet and greet with the astronauts going up on the shuttle early Tuesday morning, and hopefully get some good pictures for the kids. Sunday we’re getting a special VIP tour of Kennedy Space Center, including an area that previously has been off-limits to all tours, and still is to “regular” visitors. For this special area, we must be wearing closed-toe and heel shoes, long pants, and sleeves. Ooh…sounds neat! Monday we’re probably going to hit Disney and go to Epcot…I have two passes from 1985 (yes, 1985!) that I used when my family took my best friend, a Norwegian exchange student, to Disney before she went back home to Norway (it was a life-long dream of hers). One ticket was hers, one was mine. They’re supposed to be good forever, and we’re going to test out that policy! Then late Monday night we’re boarding buses to go to Kennedy to watch the shuttle launch from VIP seating. I’m hoping to get some good pictures for the folks back home, as well as you guys, so stay tuned

Depending on what my internet connection will be like at the hotel we’re staying at (its a luxury 5-star hotel so I’m assuming we’ll have awesome internet service) and how much time I actually have, I’ll be posting updates and pictures…however in case I don’t…I love ya’ll anyway and I’ll be home Wednesday night

It IS a Pheasant!

Thanks Carol…you were right!  It’s a Chinese Pheasant…a Lady Amherst to be precise.  I found the placard out in the garden this afternoon while eating my lunch.  They also have Golden pheasants but I haven’t seen any of those yet.  I did however spy some black swans earlier, but I didn’t have my camera with me.  Oh well…better luck next time

Justin and I took these yesterday afternoon while walking along one side of the Strip. I wore out a lot faster than I anticipated, so there aren’t as many pictures as I would have liked. Also, I have NO makeup on due to the sunburn I got on my face on Friday…I knew I’d be putting sunscreen on repeatedly and honestly, you can’t do that while wearing makeup…not and have good results anyway lol. This one was taken across the street from the Venetian. I REALLY wanted to see Phantom…its been a huge dream of mine, but alas, I’m afraid to even go price the tickets.

In front of Bellagio, and across the street from Paris:

On the walkway crossing the street in front of Bellagio and Cesar’s:

Outside the Mirage:

Yeah, we liked the Mirage’s landscaping 🙂

This one was at Siegfried & Roy Plaza at the Mirage. I always wanted to see their show. I wondered if the crystals light up at night…when we were coming back from the Treasure Island show last night I saw that it did, but most of the lights are burned out. Now only the yellow ones around the faces light up, and one or two on each side further down. After all they did for the Mirage, you’d think they’d keep up their memorial a little better…

Name that bird!! We saw this…critter…in the environment at our hotel (the Flamingo). It looks like a weird cross between a peacock and a rooster LOL. Does anyone know what it is??

More in the environment at the Flamingo:

So that’s all the pictures we took yesterday (I left a couple out because they were just more of the same shots, only from a slightly different angle). We had a lot of fun all in all, but I’m certainly glad I don’t live here in Vegas!

We ventured out after dark last night to watch Bellagio’s water show and Treasure Island’s “pirate” show (I wasn’t impressed at all) and as soon as they were over we headed back. Honestly, I didn’t want to be on the Strip after dark…it was so packed, and people were cussing and spilling drinks and in general, acting the fool, rather like in the New Orleans French Quarter. We came back to the room and just relaxed.

We’re deliberately keeping ourselves on central time…so we pass out before 9:00 p.m. local time, and we’re up around 4:00 a.m. local time. Its really nice because the Strip really is pretty cool that early in the morning. I’m going to remember to bring my camera out in the morning and take some pictures at Cesar’s that there were too many people around to get good shots of yesterday. This morning we could have had shots in front of them with NO ONE around…so that’s nice.

My room overlooks the environment, although the buffet domes are between the palms and me…still, its a nice green view, and while I can’t see the animals themselves, its relaxing to look out my window and see all these really green palms. I can also see the mountains from here. When there isn’t a glare on my window (there is right now) I’ll take some pictures and post them.

I fully intend to drive up one of the mountains this week and take shots from up there, as well as go to the roof of my hotel and get some shots.

So that’s my Vegas update for now … Thanks for looking

We made it safely! Our landing in Vegas made my husband cut the circulation off in my hand…he reached out and took my wrist as we were about to land, and when we “shimmied” across the runway on a slight angle, he gripped it HARD lol. I teased him mercilessly. I’ve had some really bad landings in my time, and this one was not bad AT ALL. The worst I ever had was landing in Raleigh one night in August, in the middle of a freak ice storm. The plane not only shimmied to the side, it SLID COMPLETELY sideways down the runway and almost went off the runway itself. I commend the pilots for keeping it on the tarmac. That one, I gripped my seat arms a bit

We drove down the Strip to our hotel yesterday, and…I was unimpressed. What’s wrong with me? Ehh I’m not saying it wasn’t nice…it was actually pretty darned cool looking. I just…wasn’t impressed *shrug*. Looking at the facades of some of the casinos and hotels actually made me wish I were in DisneyWorld instead. Yeah I know, I’m hopeless (as my husband informed me).

We found Wal-Mart after almost driving out of the state and turning around and going back. To be fair, it had moved since Justin was here 7 or 8 months ago, and they had drawn an arrow on the sign on their building, but when we passed it the first time (the old building) we didn’t stop to look at the sign due to the heavy traffic we were in. We got the food and supplies that I need to camp out for a week in the hotel room…bread, peanut butter and jelly, pretzels, Kit Kat bars (of COURSE), a jug of drinking water (I hated the taste of the tap water here in the room, and for 64 cents, that was a great deal!), a collapsible ice chest (I had thrown mine away a few years back, not realizing I would have need of a small one again one day), and a baseball cap.

There were a couple things I forgot: sunscreen…a hat…q-tips (I HAVE to have my q-tips!). These were things I’d intended to bring with me and just forgot. Still, my frugal friend Lynnae would be so proud of me…I went looking for bargains and boy did I find them. We bought breakfast stuff too…donuts, blueberry muffins, banana nut bread. I bought donuts that expire today for 75 cents instead of $2.50 (and they taste GOOD…there’s NOTHING wrong with them). I bought blueberry muffins that expire today for 49 cents instead of $1.97 (and they’re just as moist and yummy I might add). I bought a hat…a HAT…that was $6.97 for 50 cents. 50 cents!!! I’m so proud of my hat. My cooler was $7.96 yesterday we were informed by the associate who directed me to them when I asked if they had any coolers on clearance. She said she’d just marked them down…it was *drumroll* 97 cents. OMG. 97 cents!!! She thought it was an error but it scanned right so as she pulled the others down to make sure, she told us to hurry to the front and purchase mine…so we did I’m so proud of myself. I may have forgotten some things, and had planned to buy some others (the food and the cooler) but dang even Justin was proud of me. Thanks Lynnae…Wal-Mart does the same thing with their clearance items that Target does…I just never really noticed before

So today we have no plans. If Justin can’t get into the meeting he wanted to attend, we’re going to see if we can find a church to visit (I’m sure it won’t be on the Strip though lol) and then go out to Hoover Dam. After that we’re going to visit the truly awesome pool complex here at the Flamingo. I kid you not folks…their pool is incredible. And there are live ducks, geese, swans, and….FLAMINGOS. Of course I’m going to be spending a lot of my time during the days out in the landscaped courtyards of the pool complex I’m sure. Good thing my laptop has a long battery life

I’ll be posting some pictures later today. I was too worn out yesterday when we went out to make the trek back up to the room to get my camera. I wish I’d brought my cheap point-and-shoot camera…it would have fit into my fanny pack. But…I decided I wanted really nice pictures at the Dam and other areas, so I brought my SLR. Its heavy. I COULD leave one of the lenses in the room, but if I do, that’ll be the lens I need for the PERFECT shot so I have to take them both *shrug*.

Stay tuned
